Reflection

The process of developing into a supervisor has been delightful. To have the opportunity to sit with supervisees and to help guide their evolution from a student to a counselor is joyful. As I have read differing ideas about what supervision should look like in practice, I have decided to use the process that naturally proceeds from my work as a counselor. I use Solution Focused Brief Therapy in counseling and now use Solution Focused Supervision model to help my supervisees to see the strengths they are already demonstrating and those they have within that have yet to come to light. This process is encouraging to me because I get to see individuals begin to be enlightened to the abilities they already have and can be built upon as they continue to grow and mature as counselors.

I feel I have grown in my ability to have rapport with supervisees and in my ability to help them to see their strengths and to understand that they have been empowered through their training to be successful in the career as a counselor. As I move forward as a counselor educator and in work as a supervisor, I plan to remember what it feels like to be a new counselor who is unsure about how to be what is needed for the many people who will come in my office for counseling. I plan to use that remembrance to speak encouragement into those embarking on their counselor career or to reignite more seasoned counselors if having the opportunity to meet with them in a supervisory arena.

An area of growth will be to stay abreast of current research affecting the supervision process, to be as sharp as possible, so I can best help my supervisees. I also will need to be continually looking at new counseling modalities to have a good understanding of the methods being used by supervisees. I had an instance with one supervisee where I had to do some quick searching to see the tenets of his theory. This also turned into an opportunity for the supervisee to be able to tell me about his modality to check his understanding of the method.

I see the world from a Biblical-Christian Worldview. When meeting with fellow Christians, I check their level of alignment with the Christian ideas by asking a scaling question. If they rank very low, I move forward with little direct mentioning of Christian principles (though I tell people I am a Christian and it is who I am and not simply a place I go or a group I hang out with, so many of my words and stories are seasoned with a Spiritual slant). If ranking moderately or high, I ask if they would like us to include Christian principles in our time. I also ask if they would be okay with praying and then ask if they would like to lead us or if they would like me to pray. If a person is a Christian, I want to be speaking into them in a manner that will help them to be empowered by their faith to know they have a source of strength through the Holy Spirit to carry them through in moments of uncertainty and enhance moments of strength while bringing glory and honor to our Great and Holy God.
