Reflection
Becoming a counselor has been a long journey of development and continually seeking to become what or who it is that each client needs when they come in for a session. My company name is CORE Counseling and Mediation. CORE is Christ, Oriented, Refreshing, Encouragement. My desire has been to come along side of clients and to help them to consider what is at their core and how this affects who it is that they desire to be in their preferred future. This has been a motivation for developing into a counselor educator who helps others to help others. What a blessing it is to be able to encourage those who are in training to speak life into the souls of an unknowable number of people who may then be equipped to be the light that is needed in their homes and communities.
Throughout my journey of seeking a PhD in Counselor Education and Supervision I have observed all my professors teaching in an ethical and well-informed manner while also speaking the love of God into the lives of their student. These interactions help me to remember there is more to a person that simply a surface existence. It has reminded me to view a person wholistically an to consider their bio-psycho-social-Spiritual dynamics of each person. This will shape how I work with people whether in a counseling session or in a classroom.
A challenge I have from the counseling perspective is to have patience with individuals who continually acknowledge they are aware of where they want to go and who they desire to be and have a good understanding of steps to move in that direct but fail to move forward. I want to ask why are you not doing what you know to be doing, or why do you keep coming back when you have not implemented any of the other ideas that were produced through our time working together. I try to be personally observant and aware of the grace shown to me by God and know He must think why does Jeremy not just do what he should be doing. My desire is to extend the grace that God grants me towards the perpetually stagnant client and help the in each session like it is our first session.
I am a Christian who live and sees the world through a Biblical or a Christian Worldview. I often say if you cut me, I want to bleed Christian blood. This requires that I be intentional about feeding my soul a steady diet of Godliness that move my thinking towards alignment with God’s thinking. While I am still breathing there will always be room for personal growth. Counseling is a competency that is also a continual process of growth from both the roles of the counselor and the counselees I meet with. Further, it is a continual process of growth for both the teaching role and the student role. Christianity and life require that we constantly balance roles. This is also a part of the counseling relationship and a part of the teaching dynamic to help each person to know where it is they desire to be going, what difference it will make as they move towards that destination, while also remembering to be present in each moment. I had the realization recently that Heaven is exciting to think about but if that is where all of my focus is I could miss all the love, life, and joy that is happening around me each day.
